To ensure transparency and traceability, information about FWF-funded research projects has been available online on the FWF Research Radar page for many years. Through the FWF Open API, information on projects and their outputs is now also available in a structured format. In line with the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, this further enhances the visibility and interoperability of information on FWF-funded research projects.

General Information

The FWF Open API allows users to retrieve detailed information on FWF-funded research projects and their outputs dating back to 1995. The data is updated every 24 hours and is provided in English. The main indices consist of the following basic objects:

  • Projects
  • Outputs
  • Further funding

The FWF Open API is based on Meilisearch and uses its search engine to deliver real-time results. Meilisearch provides access through various programming languages, including cURL, Python, Java, C#, and others.

Documentation

The documentation of the data available in the FWF Open API includes explanations of terms and definitions.

The documentation of the Meilisearch environment provides information on queries and on how to use the environment.

Persistent identifiers

The FWF uses persistent identifiers in its project information to ensure unambiguous identification and reusability. These are part of the Open API data and currently include:

Grant DOIs: Each FWF project is identified by a unique identifier, the so-called Digital Object Identifier (DOI). See: New Identification Numbers for FWF Projects.

ORCID: Since 2016, ORCID has been mandatory for all applicants to ensure the unique identification of individual researchers.

ROR IDs (Research Organization Registry): To uniquely identify research institutions, the FWF uses the Research Organization Registry (ROR) identifiers.

DOI, PMID etc.: For research outputs such as publications, datasets, software, and code, persistent identifiers – such as Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) or PMIDs – are used wherever available.
