Abstract
"(De-)construction of the invisible", is an art project incorporating theoretical discourse. The invisible as a
philosophical concept is based on trend-setting works such as Merleau-Ponty`s "Visible et l`Invisible", or
Wittgenstein`s "Über Gewissheit". However, it can also be seen as a space-keeper for the (as yet) non-visible, the
hidden, overlooked or tabooed. Thus classified, it receives a sociological, culture-historical and psychological
dimension. The objective of the project,
"(de-)construction of the invisible" is the investigation and visualization of the invisible by means of artistic
expression, primarily that of drawing. New York has been chosen as the location for the project`s realization, with
the scientific link being the Department of Philosophy at SUNY, and as artistic contact at the same University, the
Staller Center, Department of Art. Moreover the Drawing Center in Manhattan. New York as the epi-center, now
deeply shaken, of finance, or as the case may be, of the visible world, seems to offer the biggest challenge for the
scrutiny of the invisible, be it that artists are the seismologists of society. The project should reveal the invisible
structures of the city and its inhabitants - from sewage purification plants to places of intercultural communication,
and describe (draw) them, particularly with respect to those phenomena which avoid consumerism and show a
connection to un-purchasable sublimities. A catalog, including text as well as drawings, is planned as the tangible
result of the project.
