Abstract
In the last centuries some ten thousand of examples of rock art have been found in the Alps. They are most
valuable documents of the intellectual life of former, mostly scriptless periods. In comparison to a lot of well
described places in the Western Alps there exists nearly no comprehensive documentation about the Eastern Alps.
The total project named "research and documentation of the rock art of Upper-Austrian Salzkammergut" has been
started in 1992 with the "Kienbachklamm". So now there exists a detailled documentation of this most important
place of discovery, the results were published in the "Schriftenreihe des o.ö. Landesmuseums" and brought before
public in an exhibition of the O.Ö. Landesmuseum.
In 1995 there has been documented the rock art of the whole Wolfgangtal as the second part of this project, the
results beeing published in 1997 in the "Jahrbuch des o.ö. Musealvereines". As a third part of the project the
documentation of the rock art of "Northern Dachsteingebirge" took place in 1998. In this region there has been
found a lot of rock art during the last years, none of these places has yet been documented, respectively published.
Now the total project should be finished with the rock art of central and northern Salzkammergut. Having done this
last documentation it will be possible for the first time to undertake statistical analysis of single signs, sign groups,
their frequency, regional distribution and context.
