Reciprocal Influences of Spanish and Portuguese dictionaries

Research project P 14117 Reciprocal Influences of Spanish and Portuguese dictionaries Dieter MESSNER 24.01.2000 There are a great number of studies analising the historical sources used by lexicographers of Spanish and Portuguese the dictionaries, explaining how older works (such as Nebrija or Covarrubias) influenced later ones, or how French dictionaries of the age of Enlightment were copied in the 18th century on the Peninsula. On the contrary it seems that the mutual influencences of Spanish dictionaries upon Portuguese and Portuguese upon Spanish has so far not been investigated. The research work undertaken at the Department of Romance Philology of the Salzburg University "Dicionrio dos dicionrios portugueses" which gives all entries in Portuguese dictionaries from 1562 to 1858 as well-as the good collaboration with the Spanish Academy - doing the same work for Spanish dictionaries will enable us to realize this new type of research.
