Abstract Final report

Research project P 14418 Dictionary of Indian Logic and Epistemology VIII Gerhard OBERHAMMER 08.05.2000 The aim of the project is to complete the third and last volume of the dictionary of the old Indian dialectics, epistemology and methodology (altogether 380 lemmata). This dictionary is the first attempt to make the formal terminology as developed in the early period of 1ndian philosophy (pre-Dignaga) accessible. Its aim is to show the historical development of this terminology from the beginnings of the systematic philosophical reflection up to the times of Dignaga (ca. 480 -540 AD) by use of the following sources: the early Samhitas and the texts of the grammarians like Patanjali insofar as they are dealing with epistemological or methodological terms, the texts of the Tantrayukti-tradition of the medical schools of Caraka, Susruta, etc. or the Kautiliyarthasastra, the fundamental Sutras of the classical schools like Nyaya, Vaisesika, and Mimamsa including their early commentaries, the early texts of the S5q1khya as well as the texts of the dialectical traditions of early Buddhism. The first 210 articles have been published in the first two volumes in 1991 and 1996 under the title: "Terminologie der frühen philosophischen Scholastik in Indien. Ein Begriffswörterbuch zur altindischen Dialektik, Erkenntnislehre und Methodologie. VoL L A-1, Vol. II, U-Pu" . In order to complete the third volume, the last 38 articles have to be composed and worked through thoroughly for publication. The systematic index of the lemmata as well as the historical list of authors and works dealt with has to be completed according to the first two volumes. To make the dictionary accessible for indo-logically uneducated readers, an alphabetical list of all translations of the terms with references to the Sanskrit-term and the corresponding page of the article should be added.

The aim of the project was to complete the third and last volume of the dictionary of the old Indian dialectics, epistemology and methodology (altogether 380 lemmas). Beginning in 1983, this dictionary was the first attempt to make the formal terminology, as developed in the early period of Indian philosophy (from its beginning up to 500 A.D.), accessible. The dictionary is concerned with concepts and their history, not with the words denoting these concepts. The first 210 articles have been published by the Austrian Academy of Sciences Press in the first two volumes, 1991 and 1996, under the title: "Terminologie der frühen philosophischen Scholastik in Indien. Ein Begriffswörterbuch zur altindischen Dialektik, Erkenntnislehre und Methodologie. Vol. I. A-I, Vol. II, U-Pu ", 144 pp., 192 pp. Each volume includes a systematic index of the lemma as well as a historical reference of the authors and works dealt with. To make the dictionary accessible for the indologically untrained historian of science and philosophy, it also contains an alphabetical list of all translations of the terms, with references to the Sanskrit term and the corresponding page of its article. The aim of this dictionary is to show the historical development of the terminology in the early period using the following original Sanskrit sources: the earliest text collections, the texts of the grammarians, the texts of the medical schools and the early political theory, the fundamental treatises of the classical philosophical schools including their early commentaries, as well as the texts of the dialectical traditions of early Buddhism. Concepts of the traditional Indian Grammar, of general ritualistic or grammatical rules are taken into account only to the extent that they are relevant for the philosophical terminology and its development. The third and final volume of the dictionary is planned to be published by the beginning of 2002.
