Final report
Social scientific research an everyday practices and attitudes of children und adolescents, as important present and
future members of our society, has received growing attention in the past decades. Children and adolescents have
in this context been regarded as these societal representatives, whose identity is still in the process of construction
and who in fact, much stronger than adults, ean pick up and reflect new developments. They are Seen as early
adopters of present developments, as well as antieipators of future ones.
The aim of the project is to examine the reproduction and modification of aspects of everyday life and popular
culture through recontextualisation strategies in animation films produced by 8 to 14 years old kids_ How do these
kids deal with the opportunity to express ihemselves through selfproduced films? The main hypothesis here is that
the kids use the medium animation film as space of expression {as an expression platform) for the construction of
their own perspectives of the world that surrounds them - they recontextualise recurrent and socially relevant
features of their lifeworld and thus produce images of their particular world perception.
What makes the present project a particular one is the fact that it makes use of a unique datasource, namely
animation films produced by Young visitors of the "Zoom Lall` of the Viennese children`s museum. The Zoom Lab
of the Viennese Kindermuseum gives its Young visitors the opportunity to playfully explore new technologies as
toots for realising their creative ideas. Thus short animation movies can be created in teamwork: up to 20
participants can simultaneously work togelher in the production of such one to three minutes long films. This
unique data-source allows for a methodological approach that integrales content analysis, discourse analysis and
social semiotic approaches of visual analyis for the purpose of studying processes of articulation and identity-
construction of Children and adolescents.
