The fertile hills in the north of Puglia have been colonized since Neolithic. In pre-Roman times this area has become the settlement site of the italic population of the Daunii. One of their centers was Ausculum, now called Ascoli Satriano, a small town near Foggia, the capital of the region. The excavations since 1997 of the "Institute of Classical and roman provincial archaeology, Leopold-Franzens-University Innsbruck" took place on Colle Serpente and supplied very interesting features as well for the settlement site as for the necropolis. The project "Archaeological researches at Ascoli Satriano (Prov. Foggia/Italy)" aims at the scientific work on the small finds and the features from the excavations as well as their final publication. Beside the expansion of the spectrum of finds, above all the daunian ceramic, this project wants to render new knowledge of the culture of the Daunii, their settlement sites and necropolis. For this purpose have been set up a few cooperation beside the archeological studies with natural sciences like anthropology, archaeozoology and aeobiology. The principal purpose of a comprehensive publication will not only serve the investigation of Ascoli Satriano as significant centre of an italic population, but beyond it will serve general for further research of the culture of the Daunii.
