The project at hand can be seen against the greater context of research on cultural studies, in particular of the "History of Central European Multiethnicity" and with its objectives it ties in with the preliminary project Digitalization of Text - Kingdom of Hungary. In the preliminary project the main focus lay on the publishing activities of the Pressburger private scholar Karl Gottlieb Windisch and four of his magazines - with particular attention paid to the Ungrisches Magazin (1781-1787), the first scholarly magazine in the Kingdom of Hungary - were edited in the form of a digital and annotated source data base and placed in the internet. The source material already at disposal can be accessed through the server of the University of Vienna: http://univie.ac.at/digihung. The present follow-up project wishes to enlarge the text corpus with further German-language magazines of the so- called Hungari, a group of educated citizens, scholars, and artists with a non-Hungarian mother tongue and a specific territorial identity. They were distinguished by their loyalty to the Hungarian crown and were connected to each other by their fostering of the German language (which for many of them was at the same time the mother tongue) and their wish to inform the German-speaking part of Europe about the history and culture of the unresearched Kingdom of Hungary. In the second half of the 18. century this group made a significant contribution to the formation of a scholarly public. The pivotal media which advanced this process were the German-language magazines of Hungary which at the beginning were edited above all in the urban triangle Vienna - Pressburg (Bratislava) - Pest. The preliminary project Digitalization of Text - Kingdom of Hungary concentrated on the magazines of Pressburg. The new working stage will center on and work with the beginnings of German-language Hungarian press in Vienna, Pressburg and Pest. Attention will be focussed in particular on (1) Kaiserlich-Königlich allergnĂ€digst privilegirte Anzeigen aus sĂ€mmtlichen kaiserl. königl. ErblĂ€ndern /Dniel Tersztynszky (1730- 1800), Adam Kollar (1718-1783); Wien: Ghelen, 1771-1776/, (2) Neues Ungrisches Magazin (Karl Gottlieb Windisch; Wien, Pressburg: Schaufft, Alberti, 1791-1792), (3) Zeitschrift von und fĂŒr Ungarn, zur Beförderung der vaterlĂ€ndischen Geschichte, Erdkunde und Literatur /Ludwig von Schedius (1768-1847); Pest: Patzk, 1802-1804/. The texts of these three magazines are accessible world-wide in only a very small number of libraries. The digitalization project will contribute in drawing the attention of researchers and teachers to these publications and through their examination and processing as regards both form and content, as well as through their publication in the internet will make a significant contribution to the exposure and accessibility of these hitherto neglected texts. From a technical point of view this project will be based on the project Digitalization of Text - Kingdom of Hungary and is to be carried out by the same project team under the direction of Ao. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andrea Seidler at the Department of European and Comparative Linguistics and Literature / Subdivision for Finno-Ugrian Studies of the University of Vienna.
The project Digitalization of Text Kingdom of Hungary 2 was carried out at the Department of European and Comparative Literature and Language Studies of the University of Vienna between October 2009 and October 2012. This was a follow-up project continuing the research project of the same name, also funded by the Austrian Science Fund. Within the framework of this project selected German-language periodicals were digitalized, imported (OCR-recognition) and subsequently provided with textual annotations. In the course of this work 7 periodicals and correspondences by letter were published on the platform Hungarus Digitalis http://www.univie.ac.at/digihung and commented. The work on 4 magazines has been completed, although the platform was designed to be open and is still being added to. At the moment the number of annotations comes to ca. 12,000.In the final phase the magazines were expanded with the learned correspondence of the most important scholars involved in the periodicals. The results hitherto contribute to several socio-cultural fields of research, amongst these being research into the history of the Central European press, scholarly networks, questions of multiethnicity and the identity paradigms connected with the latter as well as research on scholarly discourses in the formation phase of various disciplines.Work was done on the following periodicals within the framework of Digitalization of Text Kingdom of Hungary 1 and 2:Privilegirten Anzeigen (Wien, 1771-76; ed. Dniel Tersztynszky) Der Freund der Tugend (Pressburg, 1767-1769; ed. Karl Gottlieb Windisch) Der vernĂŒnftige Zeitvertreiber (1770; ed. Karl Gottlieb Windisch)PreĂburgisches Wochenblatt (1771-1773; ed. Karl Gottlieb Windisch)Ungrisches Magazin (Pressburg, 1781-1787; ed. Karl Gottlieb Windisch)Neues Ungrisches Magazin (Wien, Pressburg, 1791-92; ed. Karl Gottlieb Windisch) Zeitschrift von und fĂŒr Ungern (Pest, 1802-04; ed. Ludwig Schedius)
