Dimitrios Tsiantoulas an immunologist from the Department of Laboratory Medicine of the Medical University of Vienna studies the impact of the cytokine A Proliferation Inducing Ligand (APRIL) in heart attacks. A heart attack (also termed as myocardial infarction; MI) occurs when an artery that supplies blood to the heart is blocked, which in most of the cases is caused by complications of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease, and thereby leads to myocardial cell necrosis. The immune system response to myocardial injury is a major determinant of post-MI wound healing. However, the role of APRIL in the post-MI inflammatory process is not known. These studies aim to dissect the role of APRIL in heart attacks and thereby identify novel precise immunotherapy strategies for the management of this catastrophic clinical complication.
