In vielen Anwendungen in den Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften ist es nicht möglich, die zugrundeliegenden mathematischen Modelle exakt zu lösen, weshalb geeignete Parameter in diesen mathematischen Modellen durch idealisierte ersetzt werden. Diese Parameter sollten dabei so gewählt werden, dass das idealisierte Modell mathematisch einfacher zugänglich ist und die physikalischen Eigenschaften des ursprünglichen Problems immer noch hinreichend exakt beschrieben werden. Dass die idealisierten Modelle die Eigenschaften der ursprünglichen Anwendungsprobleme immer noch hinreichend gut beschreiben, ist ein mathematisch schwieriges Problem, das für viele Anwendungen bisher ungelöst ist. Im vorliegenden Projekt soll diese Frage für mehrere Problemklassen mathematisch rigoros gelöst werden. Im ersten Teil des Projektes werden sogenannte Schrödinger-Operatoren mit singulären Potentialen untersucht. Diese werden einerseits zur Beschreibung von Teilchen in Nanostrukturen in der Festkörperphysik verwendet, andererseits spielen sie in der Beschreibung von photonischen Kristallen, die als schnellerer Ersatz von Halbleitern in Computersystemen schon Anwendung finden, eine wichtige Rolle. Für diese Probleme gibt es unter elementaren Voraussetzungen Ergebnisse, welche den Ersatz der realistischen Parameter durch die idealisierten singulären Potentiale rechtfertigen. Ein Hauptziel des Projekt ist es, diese elementaren Resultate für solche Fälle zu verallgemeinern, wie sie in den technischen Anwendungen vorkommen. Im zweiten Teil geht es um sogenannte Dirac-Operatoren, welche in Problemstellungen verwendet werden, in denen Effekte der speziellen Relativitätstheorie eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Dies ist insbesondere bei der Beschreibung von Elementarteilchen wie Quarks oder in der Analyse von Graphen der Fall; solche Situationen treten in Anwendungen für Batterien, Wasserfilter oder in auch in der Solarzellenforschung auf. Für diese Probleme ist die mathematische Forschung noch im Anfangsstadium. Es ist eines der zentralen Ziele des Projekts, hier grundlegende Resultate über die richtige Wahl von Parametern in diesen Modellen zu erzielen, sodass die mathematischen Modelle die physikalische Realität richtig widerspiegeln.
Mathematische Modelle, die auf den Dirac- und Schrödingergleichungen basieren, sind grundlegend für die Beschreibung von Quantenphänomenen und werden zur Untersuchung einer Vielzahl physikalischer Systeme eingesetzt. In vielen Anwendungen wie Graphen, durchlässigen Quantengraphen (leaky quantum graphs), photonischen Kristallen und anderen Nanostrukturen sind Wechselwirkungen oft in einer kleinen Umgebung von Kurven, Oberflächen oder Grenzflächen lokalisiert. Solche Wechselwirkungen werden üblicherweise durch singuläre (idealisierte) mathematische Modelle dargestellt, die erheblich einfacher zu analysieren sind als Modelle mit realistischen kurzreichweitigen Potentialen. Die mathematische Rechtfertigung für das Ersetzen realistischer Wechselwirkungen durch diese idealisierten Modelle war jedoch in vielen wichtigen relevanten Situationen bisher nicht vollständig gegeben. Das Hauptziel dieses Projekts war es, rigorose Approximationsergebnisse für Dirac- und Schrödinger Operatoren mit singulären Wechselwirkungen zu beweisen. Das Projekt untersuchte, ob Operatoren mit regulären, stark lokalisierten Potentialen im Sinne der Norm-Resolventen-Konvergenz gegen Operatoren mit singulären Wechselwirkungen konvergieren. Eine solche Konvergenz garantiert, dass die approximierenden und die idealisierten Modelle im Wesentlichen dieselben spektralen Eigenschaften besitzen und somit dieselben physikalischen Phänomene beschreiben. Der erste Teil des Projekts konzentrierte sich auf relativistische Dirac Operatoren mit singulären Wechselwirkungen, die auf Kurven und Oberflächen getragen werden. Ein wesentliches erreichtes Ziel war der Beweis von Approximationsergebnissen für Dirac Operatoren mit Delta-Schalen-Wechselwirkungen sowie die Bestimmung des nicht-relativistischen Limes von Dirac Operatoren mit Randbedingungen. Dies stellte eine Verbindung zwischen relativistischen Quantenmodellen und Laplace Operatoren her und lieferte eine physikalische Interpretation der in den Randbedingungen auftretenden Parameter. Der zweite Teil befasste sich mit Schrödinger Operatoren mit singulären Wechselwirkungen. Im Rahmen des Projekts wurden erfolgreich Approximationsergebnisse für magnetische Schrödinger Operatoren mit Delta-Wechselwirkungen auf allgemeinen Netzwerken entwickelt. Das Approximationsproblem für Schrödinger-Operatoren mit singuläreren Delta-Strich-Wechselwirkungen wurde ebenfalls im Projekt behandelt, wobei hierzu Teilresultate erzielt wurden. Neben den Approximationsergebnissen wurden im Rahmen des Projekts auch verschiedene andere spektrale Phänomene für unterschiedliche Klassen von gewöhnlichen und partiellen Differentialoperatoren untersucht. Die in diesem Projekt erzielten Hauptresultate zu Approximationsproblemen für Differentialoperatoren mit singulären Potenzialen erweitern die bestehende Theorie erheblich von einfachen Geometrien auf graphenähnliche Strukturen und höherdimensionale Umgebungen, die für Anwendungen von direkter Relevanz sind. Die erzielten Ergebnisse liefern eine rigorose mathematische Grundlage für weit verbreitete idealisierte Quantenmodelle, stärken das theoretische Verständnis ihrer spektralen Eigenschaften und verbesserten deren Anwendbarkeit bei der mathematischen Beschreibung von Quantensystemen in der Nanotechnologie, in Graphen und in photonischen Kristallen.
