Abstract
The subject of the manuscript "Researches in the fort of Mautern-Favianis. The 1996-1997s excavations" is the
interdisziplinary work on the results of several small scale excavations in the town of Mautern on the Danube in
Lower Austria. Although the work focussed on the roman period from the 1st to the 5th century AD, the early
medieval and modern archaeological evidences were considered too. As Mautern has a long tradition in producing
ceramics, another emphasis was shifted to the analysis of the archaeological finds mainly the ceramic material. The
interpretation of the archaeological evidences was based on the interpretation of the single stratigraphical units,
documented on excavations. Therefore not only the chronology of the single periods or finds but also the formation
processes were discussed. Zoological, botanical and sedimentolocical findings were integrated in the cooperation
on the excavation features, the results of this work offer us new evidences on the ecologic, climatic and economic
conditions from roman times to nowadays. As one of the main results of this work, we are now able able to divide
the traces of human activities on the site of Mautern into detailed periods, especially those in Roman times,
beginning with the planning of the first timber fort in the 1st century to the presence of the holy Severin in late
antiquity.
