Abstract
The now published 5th fascicle of the Lexikon zur byzantinischen Gräzität (LBG) also initiates the publication of
the 2nd volume. It includes all entries beginning with lambda, my, ny, xi and omikron and a few beginning with pi.
Thus, it achieves a particular variety which manifest itself in an outstandingly large number of foreign words,
mostly of Latin origin. Besides, one finds an imposing number of typically Byzantine compounds beginning with
leuko-, makro-, mikro-, neo-, xantho- urano- and so on.
Since the publication of the fourth fascicle, the number of new editions to be considered has been continuously
increasing. Furthermore, a more thorough consideration of useful variants from the apparatus critici (for example,
of Manasses chronicle) was effected. Concerning new material, the enclosed supplement to the list of
abbreviations (with ca. 100 new entries) gives only imperfect evidence. A further increase of single quotations
which are displayed suo loco only, results above all from the use of electronic means, especially the comparison
with the online version of the Thesaurus linguae graecae (TLG). Above that, early Byzantine papyri have been
more intensely taken into account by following the relevant dictionaries, the CD-rom of the Packard Humanities
Institute as well as the supplementary list of vocabulary by Hagedorn. Thus, in comparison with the fascicles of the
first volume (A-K), an increase of about 10% of material is to be noticed.
