Abstract
Volume II/3, Cabinet Schwarzenberg, of the edition "Die Protokolle des österreichischen Ministerrates 1848 - 1867
(The Protocols of the Austrian Cabinet 1848 - 1867)" comprises 62 records from May 1st, 1850 to September 30th,
1850 plus footnotes concerning textual critism, a thorough scientific commentary as well as an introduction and a
bibliography. The detailed index will be integrated later.
The core "issues" of the Habsburg Empire as seen in Part 2 carry on into Part 3: the reforms, Hungary, and the
German Question. The restorative direction of the reforms ca be clearly seen. Provinical constructions were
proclaimed with great ceremony but were not implemented. Instead, practical necessity led to very restrictive by-
laws for the major cities that were called "provisional", but in some cases stayed in force for decades.
In July, the government managed to remove the despotic general Haynau from his position as a military governor
and head of the civil administration of Hungary. This removal was essential for Schwarzenberg and his ministers to
begin their work of integrating Hungary into the Austrian administration.
The newly strengthened position of Austria within Germany is shown by the intervention of the revived German
Confederation in Kurhessen. Risking a war with Prussia, Austria and the German Confederation decided to support
the Hessian Kurfürst in his suppression of the liberal movement of 1848.
This volume will be published in the series "Protocols of the Austrian Cabinet" of the publishing house öbv&hpt.
The volume brings together important documents scientifically adapted to be available for scientists interested in
Austrian history as well as for university teaching, and is an important source for the history of Austria and its
neighbours.
