Abstract
After a general introduction into the status of book research in Vienna and Austria the main part of the book is an
alphabetical documentation which follows a structure which will apply to all further volumes of the series
"Topography of the book market of the Habsburg Monarchy 1750 - 1850": name of the enterprises, data of the
existence, the firms activities like book-binder, book-seller, printer, reprinter, type-founder, publisher etc. with the
respective data, origin of the owner (documented or assumed nationality of non-german Austrians and foreigners,
with reference to the present states).
Many firms are then briefly characterised by special features such as their production and history. This is followed
by information about the owner (with place and dates of birth and death), predecessor and successor, branches or
locations of independent fims outside Vienna, non-resident commission agents with location or based in Vienna,
titles of the firms book-selling and publishing catalogues and later bibliographies of the relevant printing and
publishing literature and references to the literature in which the owners or the firms are mentioned. First
monographs or monographic articles are listed, followed by further references in alphabetical order.
Literature references, which are only given in brief here, are given in full in the bibliography. This bibliography
also serves as a construction element to the still missing bibliography of the history of the book in Vienna. The
book is closed by a firm, name, place and periodicals index. The additional material of the topography, which is
sometimes very comprehensive, with references as to when authority was granted; biological references, addresses
etc. can be found on the atteched RD-Rom
