Abstract
Research on Schlick has found a new platform. The first volume of the Schlick Studies provides insight into the
diverse aspects of recent controversies in the field. These controversies have accrued in the last couple of years.
One point of departure in this process was the commencement of the Critical Edition of Moritz Schlicks works in
2002. Since then, researchers from Austria and Germany cooperate closely on this project. The various volumes of
the Edition are created at the Moritz Schlick Research Center at the University of Rostock, the Research Center and
Archive for Austrian Philosophy in Graz and the Institute Vienna Circle in Vienna.
The present volume of the Schlick Studies accompanying the Edition is published at the occasion of the 125th
anniversary of Moritz Schlicks birthday. Born on 14 april 1882 in Berlin, his profession lead him to Zurich,
Rostock, Kiel and eventually Vienna. In the course of his academic career, beginning in Rostock in 1911, Schlick
created influential works for 20th century thought, like the General Theory of Knowledge (1918), Space and Time
in Contemporary Physics (1917) and Questions in Ethics (1030). As vounder of the Vienna Circle of Logical
Empiricism his influence grew beyond the borders of Europe. At the peak of his accomplishments, he was
murdered in Vienna on 22 june 1936.
Following individual stations of his intellectual life, the authors devote themeselves according to the sections of
this volume to Schlicks biography, his work and its impact. Upcoming volumes of the Schlick Studies will just as
well have thematic focuses. Apart from that, the section archive comprises articles, which are mainly concerned
with the literary estate. Finally, reviews and conference reports will also be part of the volumes.
