Abstract
This two-volume handbook on the imperial coinage of the Roman emperor Trajan (AD 98-117) is designed to be
the future standard reference for this series. Effort was made to produce a systematic, yet user-friendly, catalogue
of all the types and varieties of Trajan`s coinage on the basis of about 24,000 coins from the most important public
and specialized private collections, as well as from auction catalogues and dealers` lists. Particular care was taken
to provide an in-depth study of all the bust types used and to solve the problem of Trajan`s COS V portraiture. In
this way, it was possible for the first time to establish a firm chronology for Trajan`s imperial coinage during the
notoriously difficult COS V period (AD 103-111).
The book should prove to be an indispensable resource for scholars, dealers and collectors alike. Since the number
of specimens of each variety known to the author is indicated, it will be the first reliable guide to the rarity of the
various Trajanic coin types. A comprehensive introduction covers historical, economic and numismatic matters.
Charts permit quick orientation, and a detailed commentary explains the arrangement of the catalogue.
Concordances and indexes round off the work. All the major types and most of the minor varieties of the coinage
as well as important die-links are illustrated on 164 plates.
