Abstract
In the most recent volume of the series "Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum" (CVA) Elisabeth Trinkl is presenting 125
vessels dating to the 5th century BC. The "Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum" is a traditional and essential publication
medium for ancient pottery.
The vessels presented in "CVA Österreich 5" are part of the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien
(KHM), Vienna, Austria. The majority is well preserved, complete or even unbroken, and is published for the first
time.
These vessels function as container for oil and wine (askoi, oinochoai, and lekythoi). 109 vessels are decorated
with figured paintings in red-figured technique. The depicted scenes were mostly inspired by the everyday life. The
other vessels are so-called white ground lekythoi which were used in connection with burial and funeral rites.
Each object is described in great detail and is linked stylistically and chronologically to known vessels found in
various other collections. In addition, numerous photographs and computer-generated drawings obtained by 3D-
laser modeling are presented for each vessel.
The publication "CVA Österreich 5" was a collaborative project of the KHM and the Austrian Academy of
Sciences (ÖAW) with funding from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
