Whole-body imaging with computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or positron emission tomography (PET) are increasingly used in staging of monoclonal plasma cell disorders and for evaluating treatment response. These imaging modalities provide localized information about the state of the disease and are a critical addition to blood samples. The enormous amount of data, and the necessity of tracking local disease progress create a substantial challenge for clinical radiologists. This project will develop computer based method that allow for an accurate determination of the disease progression of multiple myeloma patients. The algorithms will detect lesions and will make the entire disease pattern comparable across time and across individuals. On one hand this supports individual diagnosis, on the other it enables the study of links between imaging information and clinical-, molecular-, and genetic parameters.
The DACH project Whole body image analysis for plasma cell disorders, co-funded by FWF (Austria), and DFG (Germany) involved Medical University of Vienna, Technical University of Munich, University of Heidelberg, and University of Rostock. The aim of the project was to develop novel methodology for the assessment, and treatment support of monoclonal plasma cell disorders, with a particular focus on image analysis of multiple myeloma patients. At the Medical University of Vienna, the primary lines of research resulted in novel methods and algorithms for the automatic segmentation of relevant anatomical structures in whole body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, techniques for the mapping of multiple computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging examinations from multiple time points and multiple patients to a single reference space, and models for the detection and prediction of multiple myeloma lesions from imaging data. The project results contribute to our capability to assess, treat, and investigate monoclonal plasma cell disorders associated with lesions that are visible in MRI.
