Abstract
Previous reports have documented a selective antiprolivative effect of local anesthetics on the growth of neurons in
culture. This research project aims to establish the selectivity of this action on neuronal tumour cells and to
characterize the mechanism of action. The experiments should also provide further information on the molecular
structures, that determine the anti-tumor effect of local anesthetics. It will be necessary to optimize the potency,
effectiveness, selectivity and safety. Using electrophysiological methods (voltage sensitive dyes and Ca2+ sensing
dyes) and biochemical methods (fluorometric- and ELISA-tests), the physiological properties of these cells under
the influence of local anestheties should be further characterized. This may lead to a novel strategy in the treatment
of neuronal malignances.
