Abstract
The project aims at research and summarization of a number of problems connected with Austrian context of Ivan
Franko`s - a famous Ukrainian writer, historian and essayist - creative activity, his stay in Vienna, the influence of
Vienna and Vienna communities (German, Polish, Jewish) on his life and creative writing. The final aim of the
project is a publication of the monograph "Ivan Franko and Vienna". The project aims at research of the following
aspects:
1) Biographical aspect: Ivan Franko`s stay in Vienna, the circle of acquaintances, interests, encounters with the
famous representatives of Austrian culture, etc.
2) Cooperation with Vienna periodicals, "Die Zeit" in particular; interpretations of Ivan Franko`s essays published
in this magazine; the study of the problem of Ivan Franko`s relation to Austrian social democrats; research of the
famous discussion around Ivan Franko`s article on Adam Mickiewicz "Ein Dichter des Verrates";
3) Research of Jewish aspect presupposes the study and interpretation of data and materials connected with Jewish
context of Ivan Franko`s activity, his attitude towards the Jews and Jewish problems; investigation of certain
contacts and meetings with such famous Jews as Henryk Monat, Victor Adler, Alfred Nossig; it is necessary to
stress that this aspect is of special interest in the context of contemporary discussions on Ivan Franko`s Semitism
and anti-Semitism as well as on Ivan Franko`s encounter with Theodor Herzl in Vienna; in his diary Th.Herzl does
not mention this encounter; on the other hand, relations between Ivan Franko and Martin Buber remain absolutely
unknown, despite their correspondence which is preserved and partially published.
