The aim of the proposed research program is to fortify and intensify scientific exchange and connectivity between two research groups located in Salzburg, Austria (Paracelsus Medical University, PMU) and Indianapolis, Indiana (Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis, IUPUI). The common theme, on which the scientific collaboration is based, is "Signal transduction in regulatory volume decrease" with special emphasis on the "Role of AMPK as a possible mediator for the regulation of swelling dependent ion transport in polarized and non-polarized epithelia." Extending the existing collaboration between the two partner laboratories with support from the LISE MEITNER program would add significant momentum to knowledge transfer between the two groups, and ultimately sustain the research activity of the Austrian group beyond the actual project by establishing short-circuit current (SCC) electrophysiology. This technique will serve as an important, novel asset in the `lead-optimization` program at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at PMU in Salzburg.
