Research project P 13694 Flemish School V G. SCHMIDT 28.06.1999
The purpose of the present project is definitely to complete the series of catalogues describing the Western
illuminated manuscripts.(French, Dutch and Flemish Schools) owned by the Austrian National Library. This will be
done by two steps:
1) Publication of the volumes "Flemish School III" and "Flemish School IV". For both volumes preparatory
research is drawing to a close. What remains to be done is
a) the standardization of the text by transcribing on disks the remaining sections of the author`s typescript, and
b) the incorporation of additional photographs (mostly of comparative material) into the stylistic commentaries on
certain manuscripts. Part of this newly acquired material is due to the recently established cooperation with
musicologists from Belgium, focusing on several important manuscripts by such Flemish composers as Pierre de la
Rue or Joaquin Desprez.
Volume III will be submitted to the Publication Committee of the Austrian Academy of Sciences: within six
months; Volume IV is likely to be ready for publication within one year.
2) As "Flemish School IV" will be the last volume in the series of catalogues dedicated to Western illuminated
manuscripts., it seems appropriate to publish a Supplement containing
a) additions or corrections concerning manuscripts already described in the older volumes of the series, and
b) full descriptions of hitherto overlooked items of Western origin. This latter section will include two abundantly
illuminated manuscripts, and six other ones with only modest decoration.
