Abstract
Research project P 14399 The Acropolis at Aegina Florens FELTEN 08.05.2000
Cape "Kolonna" at the west coast of the Island Aegina has been the location of the Acropolis and the Apollo
sanctuary of ancient Aegina for more than thousand years. Today, it is one of the oldest excavation sites of Greece.
Since the excavations of P. Wolters and G, Welter in the twenties and the thirties of the 20th century research has
been concentrated on the different prehistoric settlement phases. However, many areas of the historical structure
heavily destroyed by post-antique influences have not been investigated and, therefore, a lot of questions remain
unanswered as also recent publications have not got further results.
This project focuses on all building unities of the Acropolis from Greek and Roman times regarding building
remains and -phases, rising architecture, chronology and function. Great attention will be paid to those building
researches which are connected with current excavations. The dealing with former researches and their subsequent
evaluation are likely to achieve further results regarding the individual building remains.
The sections of the project referring to building unities form the basis for the works on topography, the structural
developments of the sanctuary and the structurally functional conception. Through the uncovering of the north-east
comer of the Acropolis during the last excavation stages one got new information on the entrance situation which
is of much interest for the sanctuary construction. Contacting typological researches, the importance of the
sanctuary on the Acropolis relative to other sanctuaries dating from the 10th century BC to the 4th century AD shall
be determined and its significance for the Polis Aegina shall be reassessed.
