Abstract Final report

Arnold Schoenberg`s writings represent - beside his compositions * valuable documents for the history of music, thought and culture of the first half of the 20th century. They are as well of high interest and importance to the research of exile and therefor to the contemporary history, too. But above all they bear witness to the varied interests of this eminent artist also in regard to questions of aesthetics, politics and religion. Part of these writings was already published when Schoenberg was still alive and not only evoked a new school but also influenced prominent composers and other significant artists such as painters and poets as well as arts scholars. A critical complete edition of all manuscripts and publications however has not been undertaken so far. The transfer of the materials of the Arnold Schoenberg Institute (Los Angeles) to the Arnold Schoenberg Center Vienna now offers the unique opportunity to realize and edit a critical edition of all writings here in Austria. The project ist estimated to result in six to eight volumes (each about 600 pages including 100 pages of scientific text and variant readings as well as 50 pages of commentary). Volumes I-III respectively IV will contain texts in chronological order with a subject index and an index of names, the remaining volumes will contain the mayor music-theoretical treatises (*Harmonielehre", *Der musikalische Gedanke", *Preliminary Exercises in Counterpoint", *Fundamentals in Music Composition", *Models for Beginners in Composition", *Structural Functions of Harmony"). The research project is dedicated to working out the fundamentals of this edition (registration of all texts, chronological order, variants, alternative texts, differentiation of the original texts from the additions by another person, documentation of the results). As the existing material consists of more than 12.000 pages of manuscripts and typoscripts, the research project has been planned for a period of 36 month and will require 1 full-time PostDoc (musicology) as well as 2 further collaborators, among them - at least occasionally * 1 graduate from English Studies (for the registration and correction of the English-language texts).
