Within the framework of this project the holdings of Greek pottery at the Institute of Classical Archaeology, University of Innsbruck, as well as four interesting private collections in Innsbruck are to be scientifically documented according to the objectives of the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (CVA). The collections include approximately 450 vases and fragments of Bronze Age, Geometric, Etruscan, Archaic and Classical Greek and South Italian pottery. The aim of this study is to make available these largely unknown vases from the collections in Innsbruck to the public as a material basis and contribution for further research. The vases and fragments will thus be documented by drawings and photographs, described in detail, categorised by chronology and style as well as assigned to vase- painters or workshops as far as possible. The iconographic peculiarities of a vase as well as comparisons to thematically related items will also be part of the documentation. Besides new directives on the scientific treatment of pottery shall be taken into account. They include conventional treatment as well as further observations such as production marks due to potting, painting or firing, use marks and repairs, graffiti and inscriptions, volume and weight measures and the graphical documentation of preliminary sketches in case of pottery with figurative decoration. The collections of vases should appear in print as a volume in the international series Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum (CVA), a joint project carried out by the Union Académique Internationale aimed at illustrating vases from public and private collections with comprehensive text and image documentations worldwide.
