The purpose of the present project is to continue the cataloguing of the illuminated manuscripts in the Graz University Library. As the catalogue of the books dating from 1400 onwards will be completed in the preceding project, the manuscripts from the period between 1300 and 1400 are now to be examined. The catalogue will present ca. 130 manuscripts which were decorated in the fourteenth century, many of them lavishly. Beside of the art historical classification of the ornamentation, the catalogue entries will contain a description of the iconography, the style of the illumination, the binding and other codicological and paleographical features of the books. The model of these catalogue entries and their arrangement is given by the catalogues of the series Die illuminierten Handschriften und Inkunabeln der Österreichischen Nationabibliothek. The basic research, which will be done in the course of cataloguing, can help to give a more precise idea of the artistic, cultural and educational geography in the region of Austria and South Germany. The goal is, to publish a survey of illuminated manuscripts from the fourteenth century, which shall provide access to the important collection of books from this period in the Graz University Library and make this treasure of visual media known to students and scholars of medieval culture for further investigations as well as to the public.
