The project aims at newly recording and documenting all the material evidence covering Lycian inscriptions as well as taking into account the archaeological, building historical, historical, epigraphic and philological aspects. The confrontation of archaeological with linguistic results follows the intention to +) clarify the relationship of the text with the monument bearing it together with the author and addressee/s by documenting the archaeological and building context with drawings and photographs, +) consider all parameters available (archaeological, numismatic, anthropological finds, possibly artistic decoration, linguistic findings, etc.) in order to obtain a definite identification (e.g. tomb, dedication, decree) and a precise date for the monument, +) gain new insights concerning Lycian sepulchral traditions (burial rituals, arrangements with the necropolis administration, punitive formula, cult of the dead, etc.) as well as the terminology within the Lycian language itself, +) understand the art-historical and socio-political context of a monument on a wider basis and thereby obtain a better understanding of the social structure or inter-urban connections together with possible inter-urban connections between the Persian administration, landowners, aristocracy and the cities. The final publication will be submitted with the appropriate structuring of the material together with critical archaeological and philological comments as well as illustrations (maps, drawn copies of the inscriptions, photographs) as a corpus consisting of three volumes (Western, Central and Eastern Lycia). A fourth volume will follow as a superordinate analytical study. All the information collected during the duration of the project (texts, drawings, maps, photographs) will be recorded in a database; this EDP-supported collection will serve as the basis for the final publication.
