Abstract Final report

The project "Old Germanic Toponyms" is planned to treat the etymologies of Old Germanic place names, i.e. to critically summarise the results of the research done up to now in a short article for every name. The aim is to allow a clear view on the results of research, to comment them critically and to add new interpretations respectively. Especially on the field of geographic names from the area of Germanic barbaricum it is of interest, if these names are in fact Germanic or of an other, possibly Pregermanic origin. That could supply important informations about the expansion of Germanic dialects. This allows the future user to form an impression of the different interpretations given for every name and of their probability or unambiguity. This is especially important for colleagues from the neighbouring scientific fields, who are not specialised on historical and comparative linguistics or Old Germanic onomastics, i.e. for all scholars or scientific branches, dealing with the same period of time, especially for the historical branch, working on the Barbaricum up to the 7th century. This is an important step towards a manual of the Old Germanic toponyms. In consideration of the diversity of the results has every single name to be dealt separately. The future user should be able to draw his conclusions based on these interpretations under the right assumptions.
