Abstract Final report

This project aims at a comprehensive monograph concerning the Austrian writer Wolfgang Bauer (1941-2005): The complete oeuvre (including the posthumous papers) and its reception are going to be investigated in a three- step-program. In addition to the works published when he was still alive, the solid grounding in the complete, so far unpublished works of the posthumous papers is to be made a focus of attention apart from the fact, that there is hardly secondary literature concerning the late (published) works of Bauer neither, or in case of plays as Foyer (2004) no secondary literature at all. Theres only one introduction to the complete works (Einführung in das Gesamtwerk), published in 1981 [!]. These findings which testify to the extremely bad situation of this object of research especially in comparison to many other contemporary authors should be reason enough to get started on a first methodical overalldescription (Gesamtdarstellung) of the complete works of Wolfgang Bauer. Apart from the publication of the achieved results in form of a book (including a bibliography) another aim is the publication of relevant unpublished works of the posthumous papers, from which not only essential achievments concerning the oeuvre can be made, but also texts relevant for the theatre can be made accessable to the public in this way. By analysis of the posthumous papers theres not only an entirely new characterization of individual texts possible, but also the complete works begin to get new contours. Another part of the project should deal with a detailed analysis of the reception of Bauers oeuvre. But this is not only a question of correcting (a large number of) misjudgements in individual cases, but also a necessary completion of the research-situation and last but not least a characterization of the changing horizon of expectations between the late 1960s and the first decade of the 21st century. As defined by the above the project is not only a contribution to an outstanding writer of the (so called) Austrian Avantgarde of the second half of the 20th century. It also fills a gap concerning the development / evolution of the Austrian drama in this period. There should be absolutely no doubt that such a study is essential for a new history of Austrian literature to be written. Just as the fact, that it is indispensable to evaluate the posthumous papers of Wolfgang Bauer coherently and in a competent way. It also should be emphasized that this project can provide the basics of a new edition of the complete works of Wolfgang Bauer.
