The Austrian National Library contains a collection that includes over 13,000 unpublished letters of Robert Neumann - the Austrian writer, exile, combative anti-fascist, publicist, and PEN International vice-president. The goal of this project is the completion of an annotated research edition of a selection of these works that would meet rigorous scientific textual standards. Replies and other relevant materials from other Austrian, German, Swiss, and British archives would also be included. The following would be systematically documented: A Letters: Along with domestic correspondence and the exchange of letters with publishers and broadcasters are letters to and from: W. Abendroth, A. Andersch, J.R. Becher, U. Becher, E. Bielka-Karltreu, Heinrich. Böll, W. Bonsels, E. Bornemann, W. Bredel, H. Bienek, H. Broch, G. Bucerius, Veza/Elias Canetti, P. Celan, F.Th. Csokor, Joh. Dieckmann, H.v. Doderer, Lion.Feuchtwanger, H. Flesch, Leonhard Frank, Free Austrian Movement, Bruno Frei, Sigmund. Freud, E. Freundlich, E. Fried, W. Girnus, Ph. B Journalistic texts (poetic, polemical, and political): Among the important literary criticism essays and writings on poetry that would be included would be those on the "esthetics of parody," "bits on impersonation," and on "witticism;" along with his essays on the "sociology of literary success" and his polemics against Andersch, Erika Mann, Habe, Sieburg and the Group 47; and finally his contributions to the controversy over pornography and the glorification of violence in literature. Among the main political texts are: the materials he produced for the German language service of the BBC (around 1941) and his contemporary statements that are of special interest in the context of the Free Austrian Movement; his later anti-fascist writings, among which are the East-West discussions on Eichmann and Us and The Lübke Case. Among his other important political writings, Neumann`s reflections on Judaism, Israel and Zionism, Antisemitism, and the ambivalence of Philosemitism after 1945 will be highlighted. C Diary excerpts, literary notes and biographical materials.
