Abstract
This research project should lead to an exhaustive database for an etymological dictionary of the toponymy of
Salzburg as well as for basic research on every aspect of regional history, no matter if from a linguistic,
philological, historical or geographical point of view. The first step will be a thorough documentation of toponyms
and hydronyms during the 13th and 16th centuries. Therefore the emphasis lies on the references of historical
names; not only printed material will be taken into consideration, but first and foremost the extensive collection of
unpublished manuscript material regarding Salzburg, such as documents and manorial registers, will be a major
field of the present research (regesta documents, chronicles, urbaria, and printed sources).
In order to be able to use this material both in an interdisciplinary way and as far as the subject itself is concerned,
the references will be represented digitally in a database. Fast access should be guaranteed on a webpage with
search criteria that are easy to handle. A compilation of all of this information has been demanded for a long time,
but has never been offered in a similar way.
