Abstract Final report

In the Europe of the 17th and 18th century, Salzburg was a music centre of rank. Famous musicians produced works for the archbishop`s court as well as for his cathedral, among them H. I. F. Biber, Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Michael Haydn. While almost all instrumental and vocal works for the court were lost during secularization, most parts and scores of the repertoire played at the cathedral have survived and have been preserved at the "Archiv der Erzdiözese" (Archive of the Archdiocese) Salzburg. The ongoing project "The Music Repertoire of the Salzburg Cathedral in the 18th and 19th century" succeeded in making about 2300 resource materials between 1670 and 1807 available for research online within http://opac.rism.info/. However, a catalogue of the Salzburg sources in the form of a book (about 930p.) is being prepared to be published independently. Several part results of the project have been discussed in articles and have been submitted. The aims of the new project "MUSIC AT THE SALZBURG METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL AS REFLECTED BY THE MUSICAL SOURCES" are: 1. The Cataloging of the source materials of the Salzburg Cathedral between 1807 and 1841: These sources have been neglected by musicologists up to now, although they contain sources of early Mozart-reception and works of Johann Michael Haydn and Franz Xaver Gruber. 2. A catalogue of watermarks will give an overview of the staff paper that was used in Salzburg during the 18th century. This will make it much easier to date a sheet of music. Samples of the writings of the most important Salzburg copyists will be published online and can also be accessed via the RISM database. Four historic inventories from the 18th and early 19th century are going to be analyzed with the help of a newly designed database with special regard to the development of the repertory. 3. The musicological results will be published in a commentary volume, which will include chapters on the liturgical requirements, musicians and musical institutions within the cathedral, aspects of determining the date of origin of source materials (Copyists, watermarks), reception and authentic performance. The project and, especially, the commentary volume will, for the first time, deal with the music at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Salzburg between 1670 and 1841 in its entirety, which, up to now, has only been treated in part aspects.

The entries are now available in http://opac.rism.info/ (Library siglum: A-Sd).A printed catalogue of the musical sources of the Dommusikarchiv (Reihe A) between 1670 an 1841 (about 1100p.) is near completion and will be published in fall (Salzburg, Pustet). A catalogue of watermarks, featuring almost 300 watermarks that give an overview of the staff paper used in Salzburg during the 18th and 19th centuries and additional information concerning paper makers, datings etc, has been published in the database of BernsteinThe Memory of paper:
