Abstract
The ancient sanctuary of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games and of athletic competion in general, has
been fascinating people from antiquity up to the present time. Apart from literary sources, most of our knowledge
relies on the excavation of the site, and especially on the numerous inscriptions found in the process. Wilhelm
Dittenberger and Karl Purgold did a marvellous job in editing the texts from the first German campaign
("Inschriften von Olympia", Berlin 1896), but since then, many new inscriptions (more than
370) have come to light and were subsequently published in numerous periodicals,
"Festschriften", and monographs, often hardly accessible to scholars. In the present volume, all inscriptions large
and small published after Dittenberger`s edition are collected, critically edited, translated into German, and
commented. Moreover, references and concordances to all recent literature on these texts as well as on the older
"Inschriften von Olympia"-material are included. Complete Greek and Latin indices make the inscriptions easily
accessible to all scholars interested in the ancient Olympic Games, in the history of religion and sports, and in
classical studies in general.
