Abstract
Climate crisis, climate vulnerability and social inequality form a context that every project
must address today. This also applies to existing buildings:
Zukunft Bestand is a holistic concept for the ecological and socially inclusive renovation of
existing housing complexes. This eco-social transformation pursues a clear agenda: 1)
contain the climate crisis by minimizing emissions from construction and operation, 2)
strengthen climate resilience by adapting habitats to extreme weather, 3) foster inclusion by
strengthening equal participation of vulnerable groups in society.
Using two case studies, the book shows how 20 measures - concrete, scalable and serially
replicable - a) preserve and inclusively improve existing structures to prevent demolition and
new construction and to preserve valuable buildings and green spaces, b) carefully integrate
anything new to create more inclusive urban living space, c) save resources and use them
sensibly.
The two housing complexes are examples of typical building methods of the 20th century -
brick construction of the 1920s to 1950s and prefabricated reinforced concrete construction
of the 1960s and 1970s. The eco-social transformation presented in the scales of settlement,
building and detail is therefore applicable to a large number of housing complexes in Austria
and beyond. The book serves as a template for actual renovations of the existing building
stock.
