Abstract
Rudolf Carnap (1891-1970) is considered one of the most important philosophers of the 20th
century. During his time in Vienna and Prague (1926-1935), he shaped the philosophy of the
Vienna Circle and became a key figure in logical empiricism and analytical philosophy when
he emigrated to the USA, first at the University of Chicago (until 1952) and then at the
University of California in Los Angeles. His work includes writings on logic, philosophy of
science and philosophy of language, but also on the philosophy of values. For the first time,
this handbook offers a complete overview of Carnap`s life, work and legacy. Unlike the
Cambridge Companion to Rudolf Carnap, published in 2007, it is not limited to a small
number of key topics, but covers a wide range of subjects in 83 articles by 71 authors. In
addition to overview articles on the state of research, the handbook also contains a series of
current research reports on the work of the editors and their cooperation partners, many of
which have emerged directly from the ongoing FWF project Carnap in Context III P 34887.
These aspects of original research cover Carnap`s intellectual biography, from the context of
the German youth movement to the Vienna Circle and Carnap`s time in the USA; Carnap`s
philosophy of value, his anti-metaphysics, the political aspects of his philosophy as well as
Carnap`s structuralism and his references to David Hilbert. The handbook is divided into
three parts: Carnap`s intellectual biography, his published and posthumous work, and his
impact on contemporary philosophy.
