Abstract
Austro-Hungarian consulate reports are first-class sources on the history of the late Ottoman
Balkans. The present edition, edited by Oliver Jens Schmitt and Eva Anne Frantz, offers
reports on Vilayet Kosovo with its administrative center in Skopje, a province that
encompasses the territory of today`s Kosovo, the northern part of today`s Republic of North
Macedonia and the Sandžak of Novi Pazar (today in Montenegro or Serbia) included. It is the
most extensive edition of such sources in recent decades, which illuminates politics, society,
economy, religion and education and therefore serves as a starting point for further research
on the Ottoman Empire, but can also function as a reader because of the often plastic
descriptions. Last but not least, the texts are also suitable for academic teaching.
