Abstract
This study is the first book-length analysis of censorship and book bans in
Austria between 1751 and 1848, covering manuscripts, printed books,
periodicals, and theatre performances. It utilizes the catalogues and monthly or
bi-monthly lists of banned manuscripts and books that have been collected,
statistically analysed, transcribed, and made available to the scientific
community via an online database in two research projects funded by FWF. Der
Wissenschaftsfonds. It further includes all available censorship regulations and
censors protocols. Books that were banned include German-language titles but
also publications in French, English, Italian, Polish, and Czech, demonstrating
that censorship sits within networks of international literary transfer. Various
case studies dedicated to certain authors, epochs, and genres further illustrate
the development of censorhip throughout the covered period. The English
language translation will make the book accessible to the non-German-speaking
academic community.
