Abstract
Hip-hop is one of todays most popular musical genres worldwide and is also an integral part of the
Austrian music scene. Just in time for the 30 year anniversary of the first Austrian hip-hop album
Swound Vibes (1990) by The Moreaus the present publication provides for the first time a detailed
and comprehensive description of the history of hip-hop music from Austria. Furthermore typical
musical characteristics from diverse hip-hop sub genres are presented through the analyses of the
music from Texta to Yung Hurn. Thus the work covers not only the historical but also the musical
development of hip-hop music from Austria. In this process the author always paid attention to the
glocal characteristics of hip-hop. Glocalization in regard to hip-hop describes the conjunction of
global prevalent characteristics of this music with the local cultural environment of the producers.
The work shows, where this glocalization can be found in the Austrian hip-hop music and how it is
realized. Examples can be found, when the rapper Crack Ignaz declares himself as the König der
Alpen (King of the Alps) in his song of the same name, or news reporter of local Tyrolian television
stations become an integral part of the music of the group Von Seiten der Gemeinde, or the
producers Brenk Sinatra & Fid Mella through sampling only Austrian and especially Viennese artists
guide on their instrumental hip-hop album Singende Klingende Unterwelt (Singing Ringing
Underworld) through a no longer existing Vienna. The publication offers a profound insight into the
multifaceted and interesting world of the Austrian hip-hop scene, which knows to position itself ably
between globalization and localization.
