Abstract
A complete scientific monograph dealing with Ernst Fuchs (1851-1930), the most important
Austrian ophthalmologist at the turn of the 19 to the 20th century, is presented here for the first
time. By his patho-histologic research work and his innovative, international teaching methods as
well as by his Text-Book of Ophthalmology, which was translated into English, French, Italian,
Spanish, Russian, Japanese and Chinese language, Fuchs gained the highest appreciation
worldwide. Thus, Fuchs raised the Vienna School of Ophthalmology to the international leading
position of this specialty for five decades.
