Abstract
Arthur Schnitzler (18621931) claimed not to give interviews, not to answer surveys and to hold
back on public statements. The present edition edits over 180 largely unknown texts that offer a
hitherto unexplored picture of Schnitzlers public persona. The focus is on almost 100 interviews,
but also replies to questionnaires and letters to the editor are included, which allow to explore who
Schnitzler was for his contemporaries. As a "public biography", it consists of texts, some of which
have not been read for a hundred years and could only be compiled through extensive research in
archives and libraries in Europe and the U.S.A.. Each text is accompanied by testimonies from his
private papers that reveal Schnitzler`s position on the text. An afterword provides an easy-to-
understand overview and facilitates access to the material. The commentary not only clarifies facts,
but also establishes connections and separates false from correct information.
