A focussed doctoral program on "RNA Biology" is planned within the framework of the "International PhD Program on Molecular Life Sciences at the Vienna Biocenter" which is a joint program from the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (Medical University Vienna and University Vienna), the Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP) and two institutes form the Austrian Academy of Sciences (CeMM and IMBA). Research groups from all these institutions participate in this doctoral program ensuring an excellent coverage of research topics in the field of RNA Biology. The applying faculty participates in several national and international program projects and networks. This will support the PhD students in their research projects and career development as well as bestow them with a broad visibility. This PhD program will offer projects in many aspects of this exciting research field ranging from the problem how proper RNA folding is achieved in nature, how RNA is localized in specialized cells, how the diverse proteome of higher eukaryotes is established by alternative splicing and RNA editing, how small non-coding RNAs exert their function in regulating gene expression and genome stability and how long non-coding RNA are able to silence gene loci and whole chromosomes. The close collaboration of the research groups together with the multidisciplinary setting of the Vienna Biocenter PhD program will be of great benefit for the PhD students, for their scientific education as well as for their future careers.
