Seoul is a global innovation hotspot: The FWF is launching a new funding program for researchers from Austria interested in conducting joint projects in cooperation with colleagues at Korean universities. © Unsplash/Getty Images

With this funding partnership, the FWF and the National Research Foundation of Korea aim to initiate new projects between researchers from Austria and South Korea. South Korea is an important partner for Austria and Europe on several levels; the country is one of Asia’s leading research nations. Since 2025, South Korea is also the first Asian country to participate in Horizon Europe, the EU framework program for research and innovation.

The FWF is now offering an additional opportunity for bilateral cooperation and invites researchers at Austrian universities and non-university research institutions to carry out new three-year collaborations with Korean colleagues. The thematic focus is on the fields of artificial intelligence, quantum research, and biotechnology – areas in which both countries excel on an international level. Joint research projects are intended to create new synergies to accelerate scientific progress, strengthen competitiveness, and generate sustainable solutions to global challenges.
