Programme for Arts-based Research (PEEK)

Please note that as of October 1, 2023, the application procedure for the Arts-Based Research program will be changed from ad personam funding to funding via research institutions (PROFI), i.e. from § 26 to § 27 of the Austrian Universities Act (UG). Starting October 1, researchers will submit their applications to the FWF via their research institution. This means that you will need to select your affiliated research institution and assign it to the application on the FWF application portal elane. Content and requirements of the Arts-Based Research program remain unchanged. The new Application Guidelines for PROFI mode will be available online under “Application documents” in early June. The application process for any Arts-Based Research proposals that researchers want to submit under the current conditions (ad personam, § 26) must be completed on elane by September 30.

Target group
Any person engaged in arts-based research who has the necessary qualifications


  • Support high quality and innovative arts-based research in which artistic practice is integral to the inquiry.
  • Increase research capacity, quality and international standing of arts-based researchers in Austria.
  • Increase both public awareness and awareness within the academic and the arts communities of arts-based research and its potential applications.

  • required infrastructure (Connection to an appropriate university or non-university institution in Austria, so that the necessary documentation, support and quality of the results are ensured)

to a maximum of 48 months

Depending on the individual project project-specific costs (personnel and non-personnel costs) may be requested. The number of reviews required depends on the level of funding requested.
