"The Atlas (of creative mechanisms): [curating - conducting] is an artistic research project in the fields of contemporary art and contemporary music focussed on curating and conducting. Atlas will generate an online platform, interdisciplinary creative activities, and a book, all realised through comparative analyses of curatorial and conductorial practices. Harnessing the visible and invisible aspects their roles, the research examines their performative functions of curatorial and conducting practices in contemporary art and repertoire music. The Atlas seeks to research and unlock new modes of understanding around creative mechanisms between two distinct disciplines in order to understand how they can nurture each other if previously invisible linkages can be discovered through the research and creative processes. Therefore, the research questions will seek how each inhabits, mirrors and mimics the other by understanding; practicing; and comparing their creative mechanisms. Atlas will bridge the territories of research and methods of practice by sharing and comparing the produced knowledge of clustered data collected during the research. In this respect, the project searches for original pathways in interdisciplinary presentation and performance research, focussed on revealing tacit mechanisms of curating and conducting. Atlass primary researchers are designer|curator Basak Senova and composer|producer David Chisholm as the CORE team. They will work with the AGENTS (conductor Ilan Volkov; artist Isa Rosenberger; artist and composer Timo Tuhkanen; artist Bronwyn Lace; and artists Yane Calovski and Hristina Ivanoska) along with the other teams of the project to collaboratively research, critique, gather, analyse, write, and perform. The base for the project will be the Institute of Art Sciences and Art Education at University of Applied Arts, and the activities will be hosted by Kunsthalle Exnergasse, WUK.
