Abstract
The eighth volume of the edition of Pope Innocent III`s chancery-registers, published as the sixth in the series of
the whole edition, is containing 218 letters written in 1205 and 1206, most of which were issueby the pope. Eight
entries were issued by others and addressed to the pope or, as for three of them, failing into a special category,
namely the consuls` of Alessandria and the margrave William Pallavicino`s oaths and a donation by the latter to the
Roman church.
The papal letters are dealing with theological, liturgical, legistic and juridical questions, the Fourth Crusade and the
relations to the Greek church, political issues in the Balcans and Hungary, the conflicts between England and
France, within the German Empire and Denmark, matrimonial matters and Property questions, efforts against
heresies, affairs in the Patrimonium Petri and in Rome, privileges and confirmations of rights and possessions of
bishoprics, monasteries and hospitals, matters concerning the episcopate and litigation within the Church, such as
contested elections to bishoprics and abbeys or disciplinary problems, and a variety of decisions offering insights in
major and minor problems of the church and the people around 1200. Many of the letters have become decretals.
The volume is offering the critical edition of the texts, the dating of hitherto undated letters, ample historical
comments, identifications of textual parallels and quotations from the Bible, Canon and Roman law, theological,
liturgical and classical texts, and the letters` insertion in decretal collections. It has been prepared in cooperation of
the Institut für Osterreichische Geschichtsforschung and the Austrian Historical Institute in Rome.
