Abstract
The Tabula Imperii Byzantini (TIB) is an historical atlas of the Byzantine Empire; up to now nine volumes with
accompagnying maps (scale 1:800.000) have appeared (1: Hellas und Thessalia, 2: Kappadokien, 3 Nikopolis und
Kephallenia, 4: Galatien und Lykaonien, 5: Kilikien und Isaurien, 6: Thrakien, 7: Phrygien und Pisidien, 9:
Paphlagonien und Honorias, 10: Aigaion Pelagos).
Already in Roman times Lycia and Pamphylia formed one province which was extended over the mountainous
peninsula of Lycia and the eastern plain of Pamphylia in the very south-west side of Asia Minor. During the
Byzantine times one could find here the main area of the maritime Theme of Cibyrrhaeots with its capital Attaleia
and its naval port Kibyra. During the sea-wars between Byzantium and the Arabs Attaleia / Antalya got a special
importance as naval base. Furthermore, it was (beside Trebizond) one of the most important ports of entry of the
Byzantine Empire. Myra in Lycia with its cult of St. Nicholas became a religious center with a big fair on
December 6th , feast day of the Saint. Attaleia was conquered by the Seljuqs in the years 1207 to 1215 but returned
to Christianity from 1361 to 1373 thanks to the Lusignan of Cyprus.
Volume 8 of Tabula Imperii Byzantini is subdivided into three parts. The first part is an introduction to get a
general idea concerning geography, history, administration, ecclesiastical history, economics, communication-
routes, settlements and architecture of the region. Furthermore, one can find the capitals Attaleia, Myra, Perge, Side
and Syllaion with separate lemmata. The second part presents more than 1,000 lemmata. The third part at least
contains the indices, 452 illustrations, the topical map of Lycia and Pamphylia, and three special maps.
TIB 8 is adjoining TIB 4 (Lycaonia), TIB 5 (Cilicie and Isauria) and TIB 7 (Phrygia and Pisidia). If it was
necessary, supplementary lemmata to the three just mentioned volumes have been added.
