Abstract

The present volume annotates of Baron Ernst von Feuchtersleben which address the issues of pedagogy and educational policy. The text covers the period from 1835 to 1849 and is drawn from journals ("Österreichische Zeitschrift für Geschichts- und Staatskunde"; "Österreichische Blätter für Literatur und Kunst"), newspapers ("Wiener Zeitung"; Constitutionelle Wiener Zeitung"; "Ludwig August Frankls Abendzeitung"; "Tägliches Ergänzungsblatt der Sonntagsblätter"; "Sonntagsblätter für heimatliche Interessen"), manuscripts from archives, a pamphlet and material included in the "Hebbel Edition". The explanatory notes also include a letter from Minister Sommaruga probably written by Franz Exner and discovered by the researcher in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (Austrian National Library) (cf. Comments to 203,3). An accompanying letter addressed to a public authority that was signed but not written by Feuchtersleben has also been treated as a authentic text (see comments to 164,32 et seq.). As far as the publication of the historical sketch "Zur Geschichte des Unterrichtes" and the "Fünf Vorlesungen über Anthropologie", this volume has had to refer to the "Hebbel Edition" of Feuchterslebens writings, since no better source could be found. One important discovery was the pamphlet published for Feuchterslebens speech to the "Akademie der bildenden Künste" (Adademy of Fine Arts) with several clarifications vis-a-vis the version printed in the "Hebbel Edition". The following Feuchtersleben texts are available in manuscript form: tow documents from the ÖAW (Austrian Academy of Sciences) archive ("Ein Natur- Princip für die Staatswissenschaft" and "Über die Frage von Humanismus und Realismus als Bildungsprincipe") and six documents from the AVA (Austrian General Administrative Archive) ("Vortrag z. Gründung eines naturhistorischen Institutes"; "Vortrag an Se. Majestät"; "Die Finanzsituation im Unterrichtswesen"; "Die Reformpläne bezüglich der medizinischen Studien"; "Stellung des Unterrichts-Ministeriums zur Akademie der Wissenschaften"; unpublished article for the Wiener Zeitung). In accordance with the publication annotation guidelines, the apparatus is structured as a paralell commentary to the text and is therefore ordered in the same way as the preceding text volume. Consequently, the apparatus for the individual texts is organised as follows: origins, traditions, variations, annotations. However, this structure could only be completed in full when authoritative, supporting documentation was available. The present volume attempts to reconstruct a signature of the times from original historical sources. In addition to the customary explanations of names, terms and words, it endeavours primarily to characterise the intellectual situation in the "Vormärz" period. From a historical perspective, the collected texts in this volume illustrate "another" side to Feuchterleben, a side previously unknown even to an interested and well-informed audience.
