Abstract
The objective of this study is to visualise patterns and constructions of German and Czech national identity during
the last decades of the Habsburg monarchy by means of contemporary picture postcards. This period was not only
the of the German-Czech national conflict in the Bohemian crownlands, but also the triumphal advance of
postcards as popular medium of mass-communication. Myths, symbols, heroes, historical and current events,
exhibitions and other subjects werde then featured on German and Czech postcards. These sources, to now largely
neglected by cultural studies research, will undergo a detailed analysis. German and Czech postcards (represented
here in by 102 illustrations) are equally considered and interpreted from a cultural and comparative perspective.
Although this study focuses primarily on the Bohemian territories, the monarchy as an important reference
framework is also continually considered.
