Abstract
"..because freedom does not come by itself" examines womens participation in the Yugoslav National
Liberation Movement with a focus on their armed resistance. Based on the partisan movements internal documents
and propaganda, it describes womens resistance as a collective practice and analyzes dominant interpretations of
that practice. The individual experiences of women partisans as reflected in their recollections are also accorded a
prominent place.
