Abstract
The eleventh volume of the edition of pope Innocent III`s chancery-registers, published as the ninth in the series of
the whole edition, is containing 255 letters written in 1208 and 1209, most of which were issued by the pope, and
further 16 of his letters which were added as a decretal collection on a separate quire. Two entries were sent to the
pope by the king of France regarding the lawsuit on his marriage and by the Latin emperor of Constantinople who
reported a victory and asked for support. Most of the the letters, however, are dealing with theological, liturgical,
legistic and juridical questions, the church organisation of the Latin Empire of Constantinople figuring most
prominently in this volume, political and ecclesiastical issues from Sicily to Scandinavia, matrimonial matters and
property questions, efforts against heresies, acts of government in the Patrimonium Petri, privileges and
confirmations of rights and possessions of bishoprics and monasteries, matters concerning the episcopate and
litigation within the Church, such as contested elections to bishoprics and abbeys or disciplinary problems, and a
variety of decisions offering insights in major and minor problems of the church and the people around 1200. The
conflict with the king of England over the election to the see of Canterbury continues, but the greatest impact is left
by the murder of the candidate for the German throne, Philip of Suabia, seemingly resolving the German matter,
and the murder of the papal legate Peter of Castelnau, triggering the Albigensian crusade. Many of the letters have
become decretals.
The volume is offering the critical edition of the texts, the dating of hitherto undated letters especially in the
decretal collection, ample historical comments, identifications of textual parallels and quotations from the Bible,
Canon and Roman law, theological, liturgical and classical texts, and the letters` insertion in decretal collections. It
has been prepared in cooperation of the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung and the Austrian
Historical Institute in Rome.
